Conclusion
The Enlightenment and the key figures a part of it provided an intellectual framework and guidance for revolutionary leaders to challenge traditional authority and create a new system of government. Locke, Smith, and Montesquieu were all influential during their time, but arguably more so when we see their ideologies reflected in the leaders of the American Revolution. Jefferson, Franklin, and Madison may not have had these beliefs if they were not influenced by an era before their time. The incredible philosophies of these leaders show us how the ideas of the Enlightenment continue to frame and influence modern democracy and government.
