While studying the American Revolution, one tends to focus more on the military and political topics of that time. However, just like there are two sides to every story, the American Revolution wasn’t limited to just those. There were many causes that built up towards the war. One of those causes was religion in the young United States. As Christine Heyrman wrote, “The members of the revolutionary generation had faced, as individuals, important choices about their fundamental religious beliefs and loyalties.” 1 Religion played an important role in the cause of the Revolutionary War such as the Great Awakening, key people like Jonathan Edwards, sermons written at that time, and even some years after the war.
