Introduction to the Boston Tea Party
The Boston Tea Party was a pivotal event in American history on December 16, 1773. It was a political protest by American colonists against British taxation, specifically the Tea Act, which allowed the British East India Company to sell tea directly to the colonies, undercutting local merchants. Frustrated by "taxation without representation," a group of colonists, disguised as Mohawk Indians, boarded British ships in Boston Harbor and dumped over 300 chests of tea into the harbor. This act escalated tensions between Britain and the colonies, contributing to the outbreak of the American Revolution.
The goal of my OMKEA exhibit is to further educate people about the importance of The Boston Tea Party and how it is not something that should be overlooked when discussing American history. I want to explain how colonists had enough with being over taxed and under represented by the British government and how courageous it was for them to rebel. I also want to explain how massive of a protest this truly was.
