Years after the convention, the Democratic-Republican party was easily able to use the deeply unpopular convention to besmirch its political enemies during political campaigning. And even had it not been for the convention, the Federalists had acted for their own interests and against the interest of the United States as it fought in the War of 1812. As previously mentioned, Federalists were "clogging the wheels of war" by discuraging enlistments in the army, stopping war loan subscriptions, witholding taxes, and much more. The War of 1812 was deeply unifying for the rest of the country, it was seen as a Second War of Independence. When most of the country is united in seeing their country succeed and win the war, those who opposed it would always be demonized and be unpopular.

In February 14, 1815, Thomas Jefferson wrote a letter to Lafayette in which he says, "The evaporation of their [British] hopes from the Hartford convention, will probably raise a clamor in the British nation which will force their ministry into peace... They are playing the same game for disorganization here which they played in your country. The Marats, the Dantons, & The Robespierres of Massachusets are in the same pay, under the same orders, and making the same efforts to anarchize us...I do not say that all who met at Hartford were under the same motives for money... Some of them are Outs, and wish to be Ins; some the mere dupes of the Agitators, or of their own party passions".1 Jefferson despised the Federalists and the British, but even accounting for his bias it would not be a stretch to consider that many Americans would hold these same opinions. That many Americans would see the Federalists and their Hartford Convention as British marionettes. And even if they weren't, that they were the outs wanted to be the ins or simply just useful idiots. The Federalist party was already weak and dying out before the war started, surviving only in New England. But with its conduct during the war and the disastrous image they got wrapped around them, its end would be assured.

Over twenty years after the War of 1812, the United States was having a debate over if Texas should be annexed or not. The Whigs opposed the annexation and the Democratic Party wasted no time in slandering them by bringing up the Hartford Convention and calling them Blue Lights. Presenting an image to the voting public that associated Whigs with the treasonous Hartford Convention and the Blue Light Federalists during the War of 1812. Even decades later the same tactics that won them elections during the 1810s would still resonate to the American people.
