USS Columbus capturing the brig Lord Lifford

Though the popular retelling of the Revolutionary War focuses almost solely on George Washington's army, it would be remiss to not mention the gallant sailors of the Continental Navy. From 1775 until the war's end, thousands of people fought on the decks of the Continental Navy, the state navies, and the privateers, not to mention the French and Spanish fleets. American independence owes just as much to these sailors as it does to the army, who itself would have had no clothes to wear or powder to shoot if not for the navy. Though the British Army was feared, the Royal Navy was the pride of the empire, and the revolutionaries proved they could step to the task at hand, and did so with unrivaled bravery and zeal.
