Conclusion and Summary

William Mannings interpretation of Shays rebellion through the eyes of a common farmer and veteran.

When the rebellions started off in 1786 nobody understood the impact and ripples that they would create. The quickly gathered state militias struggled immensely with the organization, funding, and command when trying to deal with the protection of court systems. Many saw that this was not a sustainable way of life and that the disregard of judicial and societal proceedings would lead to anarchy and collapse. After finally subduing and pacifying the end of violent demands, the representatives from each of the states had a universal understanding and agreement that there needed to be a massive change. The Anti-federalists who fought vehemently against having a strong central power slowly lost their edge and their arguments got their roots chopped out from underneath them. The need for unity and protection for the whole country could no longer be ignored and the separation that many had fought for clearly had too many negatives that outweighed the upside. Founders worked tirelessly keeping Shays' rebellion with evidence being found imprinted throughout the whole document and finally agreed upon something that has stood as a protection for our nation's people for centuries.

Going through many of the facts that have been presented you can see there is a strong case for looking at Shay's rebellion as a driving factor and engine behind the creation of the United States Constitution. Americans all over the country were alarmed by these shocking demonstrations but mostly only the educated understood the significant shift that it would cause on the political climate of our young nation. The Articles of Confederation were written a mere ten years prior in 1777 but through its demonstration of innate inadequacy, the top minds of our time decided there was need for change. Shays’ rebellion originally started out as a movement from the people to demand a change to the monetary system. It ended up highlighting and creating strong cases showing how necessary having a strong central government is for funding, protection, and unity.
